THE ESSENCE- THE INDIA I LOVE FROM RUSKIN BOND

The India I love  is a short book made out from Ruskin Bond's diary pages written over a long period of time.

Ruskin recounts his whole life in this book from his early childhood to when he was seventy.
Every chapter starts with a title and a small poem.

Ruskin's father was a teacher and he traveled all his boyhood to various parts of India
including Kerala and Kolkata, then settled to Bishop Cotton school in Shimla. His grandparents from h
is mother's side were from Dehradun where they settled after retiring from a job in railways. His mother remarried a Punjabi from Dehradun. This explains why he always lived in Mussorie.I have not read many of his books in recent past, but now look forward to reading some as he writes in a very candid way.

He went away to England when he grew up but returned to India where he was born to live
forever. He likes the atmosphere in India where there are no restrictions and he can live his
life as he wants, the only thing he wanted to ever do was writing and he never married but
has family of twelve as one Prem lived with his family with him.He writes about Prem's wife
and children and grandchildren.

He also recounts various acquaintances he met and formed relationships with them.He comes out as a very kind, nature loving and honest person. He describes areas around Dehradun in great detail like Nahan and Ganges etc. There is also some references to Jim Corbett and other Britishmen who have some historical importance in that geographical area.

I somehow liked the book very much and recommend it.Its very inspiring too.
Thanks for reading my review.

THE ESSENCE- THE ALCHEMIST BY PAULO COELHO

A recurring dream troubles Santiago, a young and adventurous Andalusian shepherd. He has the dream every time he sleeps under a sycamore tree that grows out of the ruins of a church. During the dream, a child tells him to seek treasure at the foot of the Egyptian pyramids. Santiago consults a gypsy woman to interpret the dream, and to his surprise she tells him to go to Egypt. A strange, magical old man named Melchizedek, who claims to be the King of Salem, echoes the gypsy’s advice and tells Santiago that it is his Personal Legend to journey to the pyramids. Melchizedek convinces Santiago to sell his flock and set off to Tangier. When Santiago arrives in Tangier, a thief robs him, forcing him to find work with a local crystal merchant. The conservative and kindly merchant teaches Santiago several lessons, and Santiago encourages the merchant to take risks with his business. The risks pay off, and Santiago becomes a rich man in just a year.
Santiago decides to cash in his earnings and continue pursuing his Personal Legend: to find treasure at the pyramids. He joins a caravan crossing the Sahara desert toward Egypt and meets an Englishman who is studying to become an alchemist. He learns a lot from the Englishman during the journey. For one, he learns that the secret of alchemy is written on a stone called the Emerald Tablet. The ultimate creation of alchemy is the Master Work, which consists of a solid called the Philosophers Stone that can turn lead to gold, and a liquid called the Elixir of Life that can cure all ills. Santiago learns the Englishman is traveling with the caravan to the Saharan oasis of Al-Fayoum, where a powerful, 200-year-old alchemist resides. The Englishman plans to ask the alchemist the secret of his trade.
As it turns out, the caravan must make an extended stop in Al-Fayoum in order to avoid increasingly violent tribal wars taking place in the desert. There, Santiago falls in love with Fatima, who lives at the oasis. During a walk in the desert, Santiago witnesses an omen that portends an attack on the historically neutral oasis. He warns the tribal chieftains of the attack, and as a result, Al-Fayoum successfully defends itself against the assault. The alchemist gets word of Santiago’s vision and invites Santiago on a trip into the desert, during which he teaches Santiago about the importance of listening to his heart and pursuing his Personal Legend. He convinces Santiago to leave Fatima and the caravan for the time to finish his journey to the pyramids, and he offers to accompany Santiago on the next leg of his trip.
While the alchemist and Santiago continue through the desert, the alchemist shares much of his wisdom about the Soul of the World. They are mere days away from the pyramids when a tribe of Arab soldiers captures them. In exchange for his life and the life of Santiago, the alchemist hands over to the tribe all of Santiago’s money and tells the soldiers that Santiago is a powerful alchemist who will turn into wind within three days. Santiago feels alarmed because he has no idea how to turn into the wind, and over the next three days he contemplates the desert. On the third day, he communicates with the wind and the sun and coaxes them to help him create a tremendous sandstorm. He prays to the Hand That Wrote All, and at the height of the storm he disappears. He reappears on the other side of the camp, and the tribesmen, awed by the power of the storm and by Santiago’s ability, let him and the alchemist go free.
The alchemist continues to travel with Santiago as far as a Coptic monastery several hours from the pyramids. There, he demonstrates to Santiago his ability to turn lead into gold using the Philosopher’s Stone. He gives Santiago gold and sends him off. Santiago begins digging for the treasure at the foot of the pyramids, but two men accost him and beat him. When Santiago speaks to them about his dream vision, they decide he must have no money and let him live. Before leaving, one of the men tries to illustrate the worthlessness of dreams by telling Santiago about his own dream. It concerns a treasure buried in an abandoned church in Spain where a sycamore tree grows. The church is the same one in which Santiago had his original dream, and he finally understands where his treasure is. He returns to Spain to find a chest of jewels and gold buried under the tree, and plans to return with it to Al-Fayoum, where he will reunite with Fatima, who awaits him.

THE ESSENCE- LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT BY PREETI SHENOY

It’s a fiction story written by Preeti Shenoy who is a master in getting the readers attached to the story so strongly that they not only understand but feel the character’s ups and downs. It could be the feeling of being loved or a feeling of determination, defeating everything that we face our everyday life. I would appreciate the writer for not being too unrealistic but by presenting the real life story through her observant eyes. Though it’s a work of fiction nevertheless it has not lost the hold over authenticity.
The story is about Ankita a young, intelligent college going a girl from a conservative family who faces a weird phase of life where she has no control over herself. From being too intelligent, matured, well-known; she becomes mentally ill and gets lost in herself.
The story starts from her college life and newly born feeling of love for her best friend. She is smart enough for getting an art club secretary post in her reputed St.Agnes college. Ankita’s changed practical approach is shown cleverly through the sudden events in which she is adopts a new life with different beliefs. As Vaibhav and Ankita are in long distance relationship, Ankita easily gets closer to Abhi and Vaibhav is unaware of all these things.
Later Ankita has to break-up with Abhi which is an unbearable pain for Abhi. Ankita takes it too practically and Abhi takes it to emotionally causing an accident death of Abhi in distress. She moves on and focuses her entire attention on studies after coming to Mumbai. Though a sentence said by Abhi’s grandfather ‘Never belittle love’ still makes her feel guilty like a whore. To come out from the pain and to overcome the feeling of guilt; she devote her whole time to studies. She tops in college, make new friends.
She thinks she has moved on and the happiness of work can get over the emotional trauma but there she makes the mistake. She is being appreciated and gets success, friends everything but the pain she had been kept avoiding somewhere disturbs her. She starts behaving weirdly. Steadily start doing silly things like boozing and dancing at the top of terrace, getting in relationship with Joseph to feel the love she had for Abhi, studying day and night, making poems through the guilt.
She loses all her senses. She is not able to write or read, she feels lost in crowd, and she feels like killing herself. She reaches to a mental stage where all her and doctor’s efforts are proved useless. Her destiny becomes too cruel to her. Abhi’s memories, gulit of cheating Vaibhave and Joseph kills her inside. Her emotional trauma doesn’t let her move on. All medicines, treatments go to vain.

After the regular attempts of suicide, she has been moved to mental hospital where she is treated in different way for cure. There she develops a special bond towards Dr. Madhusudan and trusts him fully. She does not meet her parents for months and make a different life there. After the long term treatment she becomes normal. She drops MBA and confess everything to Vaibhav and finally comes out from that weird phase of her life.
To know how she overcomes her trauma and to know how an emotional and practical balance is necessary to have a normal life; you must read this book. This book talks about the genuine feelings of a human being, a break down because of our own ‘Karma’, a suffering of a mental patient. I will recommend you to read this book because it will teach you how to have a balance between determination, faith, love, and career. It really makes a person cry because it is written out of a sensitive heart which touches your heart too.

THE ESSENCE- HALF GIRLFRIEND BY CHETAN BHAGAT

Finished the novel by most upcoming writer and bestseller Chetan Bhagat's Half Girlfriend.Thought i should post a review on this book.

The books main hero is the story and the situations created by the author and its a tremendous writing example one can really want to see.

The story starts with a boy lived in the small village of Bihar called Dumraon and he struggles a lot with the English. In fact later it was revealed that the boy actually belongs to a dynasty of Jha family and was a actual prince.

Anyways the boy gets admission into Stephen's college in Delhi through sports quota as he was able to show his skills in the game of Basketball in spite of his very bad interview with the faculties.
On that court he saw a very beautiful tall amazing kind of girl,he later described playing basketball with some team and struggling alone from her team. She eventually come to take the ball from the Jha boy and the story starts.

She was a rich girl from Delhi high colony and could not fall for a boy lived in a poor and backward state of India but the game of basketball made the situation very attractive towards the story. Both started to spent so much time together and the boy was a little shabby and cocky and made his move towards a romantic relationship with the girl. The girl hesitates for this condition but the boy pushed so hard and then the girl utters a word that she can be his "HALF-GIRLFRIEND". And that is how the title of the book can be stated. That is the only thing we can assume through the title. After that the boy pushed so hard to get physical with this girl and mummers some insignificant and poor word from local language that strikes the girl very hard and the girl leaves the boy.

Girl leaves the college in between the semester and boy happen to know that she was getting married with one of his old Rakhi Brother and that is weird. She gives invitation card to the boy and expects to come to the wedding but the Jha boy didn't really care for that.

Meanwhile boy got the job from campus in very good bank at Delhi it self but refused to do so because he was frustrated and wanted to go back to his hometown where he helps to run a rural school in Dumraon alone with his mother. The description of the rural school was as similar as any of the Indian rural school facing in this time.

The story takes a huge turn when the worlds richest man BILL GATES was about to come for the visit in India for various funding and rural activities. The boy was running the school very well and thus he was contacted by one of the crew members from the tour of Bill gates Samantha. The boy was told that he need to prepare a high class speech to attract the Bill gates foundation to get some fund to the school development and rural help.

The boy was not sure if he can give a speech in fluent English that he was struggling with the language despite of he had attended one of the best English college in Delhi. He happen to take the English classes in Patna which was 3 hours far from his village. The boy met to the crew member in a hotel in Patna. The girl after one and a half year and divorced happen to work in Patna in some company and happen to checking in to the same hotel and took attention from the boy who was sitting in the lobby. The boy met this girl after one and a half year and story again starts with feelings in it.

Boy describes the situation about funding and all and as usual the girl did not come up with too much of herself as she was very shy about her family and life. She helps to get it done with the speech and spends time with the boy.She did not give any ideas that she was available or vulnerable but the boy still pushes in a mature way.

Bill gates arrived.Boy gives a great speech and creates a miracle in terms of the rural development. The girl again leaves the boy with a single later confessed that she really loves him and does explain a fake illness death in upcoming three months.

Boy gave the all story and generals of the girls without reading to who ? Guess? Chetan Bhagat himself.Very good.
Chetan Bhagat reads all the generals of this girl and explain that the girl is not dead but went somewhere very strange place in the world that no one can find her.Boy could not believe it but hopes that someday he will find her.

Boy gets three months internship at New-York as he had contacts with the foundation members. He moves to the city and happen to live with his college friend with one and only agenda of finding this girl. His friend suggests to move on one side and praises his chase on the other side.

Before the ending of the third month and a great chase of the two months, the boy finally happen to find the love of his life, on a live event singing a beautiful song. She sees him and stares for a minute and starts crying. And one can hope for a Happy Ending for this novel.

After three years the Jha boy invites the Author himself to open a new venture of basketball court at the rural school in Dumraon. Mother of the boy accepted the girl and was happy to have a grandson. So in the end ALL is WELL.

The ESSENCE - THE SIX THINKING HATS BY EDWARD DE'BONO

The six thinking hats - Book review

Finished reading a year ago thought i should start reviewing about the books i have read.More books are on the way.Anyways "The six thinking hats: Edward De' Bono" is one hell of a book to read.
It defines the way of an individual to react on a particular subject.Edward D'Bono is a world renowned writer and had faculty appointments at the universities of Oxford,London , Cambridge and Harvard. He is widely regarded as the leading authority in the direct teaching of thinking as a skill. He originated the concept of lateral thinking and developed formal techniques for deliberate creative thinking. There are over 4,000,000 references to his work on the internet and one of them is here.

So the book starts with the preface of the concept of the SIX THINKING HATS.The author gives the best way to optimum a decision on top management as well as the bottom level of workers.

He gives : 1. THE WHITE HAT
                  2. THE RED HAT
                  3. THE BLACK
                  4.THE YELLOW HAT
                  5.THE GREEN HAT
                  6.THE BLUE HAT

WHITE HAT

white hat is neutral and objective. The white hat is concerned with objective facts and figures.

White Hat Thinking: Information That We Have

We can often find more information by taking a close look at what is known than we might expect. It’s like detective work: each known fact can be examined for its significance.

White Hat Thinking: Information That We Would Like to Have

Here we include everything that comes to mind, without deciding whether there is a way to get the information or how urgently it is needed. Sometimes there are ways of getting information that at first seems unattainable.

White Hat Thinking: Information That We Need

If we focus on information that we need after we’ve listed everything that we’d like to have, then it’s a matter of prioritizing. If we’ve gone straight to thinking about what is most needed, then it’s a matter of discriminating. What’s the minimum information we must have before we can move forward?

White Hat Thinking: Information That is Missing

Here we are pinpointing exactly what information is missing.

Example:

“We do not know why this candidate has never held a job for more than 18 months.”

White Hat Thinking: Sources for Getting any Missing Information

Listing sources of information and planning how to get information are part of white hat thinking. It’s never enough to complain that the information is missing. We have to go out and get it.

Example:

“We could ask people who have worked with her in the past.”
White Hat Thinking is very important because the quality of any decision made depends on the quality of the information on which it is based.

RED HAT

Red suggests anger(seeing red) , rage and emotions. The red hat gives emotional view.

Red Hat Thinking: Signaling feelings

Red Hat Thinking is very valuable because it makes clear that intuition, feelings, and emotions are going to be expressed as such. There is no need to pretend that they are something else. If feelings are indeed present, it is helpful to know what these feelings are. We can then see what we are dealing with.

Example
“My Red Hat feeling is that I resent the email that was sent out.” (Notice that no reasons are given. It is difficult but important not to explain the reasons.)

Red Hat Thinking: Considering Feelings in Decision Making

Feelings and intuition cannot be checked out, so it is unwise to use the Red Hat alone for decision making. However, Intuition, hunches, feelings, and emotions have a high value as “ingredients” in the thinking that leads up to a decision.

Example
“The facts do not support going ahead with the plan, but my Red Hat feeling is that we should explore it further.”

Red Hat Thinking: Recognizing a Range of Feelings

Red Hat Thinking includes a wide variety of possible feelings. On the positive/negative scale, people may report everything from detesting an idea to being wildly enthusiastic. More subtle feelings are also included: feeling curious or mildly interested, being uncertain or ambivalent, finding a proposal boring, etc.
When taking the general temperature of a group (rather than feelings about a specific issue), various members may report feeling upset, fearful, excited, angry, determined, exasperated, optimistic, tired, or a host of other internal states. It can be helpful to know what state people are in before you even start the agenda. Remember not to ask for explanation.

Examples
“I’m excited that we’re meeting today and can’t wait to get started.”
“My Red Hat is annoyance.”

BLACK HAT

Black is sombre and serious. The black hat is cautions and careful. It points out he weaknesses in an idea.

Black Hat Thinking: Exploring Lack of Fit

Whenever something is suggested, we need to make sure the idea fits the circumstances. Black Hat Thinking points out things that do not fit the facts, regulations, strategy, our experience, or our values.

Examples
“Following this suggestion won’t fit recent changes in the tax laws. It’s no longer to our advantage to do it this way.”
“This proposal to change the specs for building that addition would be less costly. But it doesn’t fit the building codes.”

Black Hat Thinking: Looking at faults

The Black Hat helps us improve on an idea by drawing attention to the faults in the idea. Once we see the faults, we may be able to think of ways to overcome them. Note: We think of ways to overcome them later, when we’re using Green hat thinking.

Example
“If we order these items in larger quantities to take advantage of the volume discount, we will have the expense of renting more storage space to warehouse the inventory.”

Black Hat Thinking: Scanning for Potential Problems

Black Hat Thinking can discover potential problems that might arise. Then we can either design ways to avoid the problems or be prepared to address the problems if they do come up.

Example
“If we describe our product in detail on the website, it may be an open invitation for others to copy our design.”

Black Hat Thinking: Assessing Yellow Hat Output

Black Hat Thinking is a powerful assessment tool to use after Yellow hat thinking. Before an idea is put into action, we need to see if it is safe, legal, feasible, profitable, etc.

Example
“We found a lot of benefits to this idea; now let’s black hat it.”

YELLOW HAT

Yellow is sunny and positive. The yellow hat is optimistic and covers hope and positive thinking.

Yellow Hat Thinking: Values and Benefits

Values are more abstract than benefits. We may sense a value in an idea and then need to look around to see how the value can be enjoyed. Benefits are more specific. Who will reap the benefits? How are the benefits going to be enjoyed?

Examples
“Could we implement this idea in such a way that it improves customer satisfaction?”
“Awarding a bonus for employees at their five-year anniversary may reduce our turn-over.”

Yellow Hat Thinking: Reasons for Optimism

In Yellow Hat Thinking, there must be reasons to support the benefits that are claimed. In Green hat thinking, we note possibilities even if they are vague and unlikely. With the Yellow Hat, we must have reasons why something has value or might work.

Example
“If we include home décor along with our outdoor sporting equipment, we could attract people who don’t actually get out much, but who like to feel that they lead a healthy, active lifestyle.”

Yellow Hat Thinking: Feasibility

Can this idea be made to work? Will this idea work in practice?  We can estimate feasibility given the existing system, and we can also consider modifying either the idea or the system to increase the feasibility.

Example
“How could we feasibly expand the public school system downward to cover children aged three and up?”

Yellow Hat Thinking: Concepts

Sometimes the idea itself is unattractive, but the concept behind the idea has great value. Any idea is only one way of carrying out a concept. There may be better ways. So we keep the concept alive and later use Green Hat Thinking to develop more feasible ways to carry it out.

Example
“This idea is not very attractive but the underlying concept of creating an online store as well as setting up distributors has a lot of potential.”

GREEN HAT

Green is grass, vegetation and abundant , fertile growth. The green hat indicates creativity and new ideas.

Green Hat Thinking: The Green Hat as a Formal Signal

People often say that they cannot be creative because they don’t have time or their work culture doesn’t encourage it. Green Hat Thinking creates a micro culture for innovation at any given moment.

Example
“We need to think of other ways to do this. Put on your Green Hats.”

Green Hat Thinking: Expecting Creative Effort

You cannot demand that people have wonderful new ideas, but you can expect them to develop a habit of making a creative effort. Use Green Hat Thinking to call for this effort. Creativity is a matter of investing time in generating ideas. You won’t get a wonderful idea every time you use Green Hat Thinking, but if you do not put forth any effort, you may not get any new ideas at all.

Example
“This is a difficult situation. Let’s spend three minutes using the Green Hat. Jot down your ideas individually. Then we’ll see what we’ve come up with.”

Green Hat Thinking: Adopting a Creative Attitude

What if you’re in a Green Hat session and can’t think of any ideas? The simplest form of creative effort is to look for alternatives. Even if these are well-known, it’s a creative effort to recall and list them. The minimum creative effort during Green Hat Thinking is to think of alternatives.

Example
“Here’s one alternative: We could bundle some of the slower selling items in with more popular ones and sell the combination as a package. What are other options?”

Green Hat Thinking: Green Hat Thinking in Problem Solving

When black hat thinking reveals faults, the Green Hat is used to remove these faults. When Black Hat Thinking points out difficulties, Green Hat Thinking tries to overcome these difficulties.

Example
“Let’s use the Green Hat right now to see if we can fix the Black Hat problems.”

BLUE HAT

Blue is cool and it is also the color of the sky, which is above everything else. The blue hat is concerned with control , the organization of thinking process and the use of the other hats.

Blue Hat Thinking: Setting Out the Agenda

Here we’re referring to making a plan for using the hats as well as for how and when we’re going to handle any other activity during the meeting.

Example
“Okay, Blue Hat, everyone. We have the conference room for one hour. What hat sequence would make the most of our time?”

Blue Hat Thinking: Maintaining Discipline

When discussions become heated or get off track, there is a need for someone to put on the Blue Hat and control the situation. Otherwise, the thinking can quickly revert to the traditional argument.

Examples
”That is a good yellow hat point. Right now, however, we are using green hat thinking  and listing all of the alternatives we can think of.“
“The focus of this meeting is how to eliminate unnecessary steps in the ordering process. We can change the focus if we all agree, but we don’t want to drift away from it by accident. Let’s stick to the original focus for now.”

Blue Hat Thinking: Noting Conclusions

It is part of Blue Hat Thinking to state conclusions that a group seems to have reached and get agreement to or revision of the stated conclusions. Even if no decision has been made, the conclusion should note new ideas and approaches that have been considered. A summary is concerned with what has taken place. A conclusion is concerned with what has been achieved.

Example
“The conclusion is that each sales area should decide on its own promotion and price-cutting policy.”
